Southwest launches a ChatGPT plugin: flights in the chat, extras still on Southwest.com

By Loris Mazloum

On October 6, 2026, Southwest Airlines launched a plugin in ChatGPT, which it calls a first-of-its-kind U.S. airline plugin. It is built with OpenAI and AWS and described as “the first step in a phased AI-powered booking approach.”

What the plugin does

According to Southwest’s help center, as summarised by The Points Party and Travel Weekly, travellers can:

Where it stops

Booking does not happen in ChatGPT. Southwest’s words: “You book on Southwest.com, not in ChatGPT.” Payment, Rapid Rewards login, the reservation, and account management all happen on Southwest.com or in the app. The selected flight and fare can carry over, and the traveller then picks a seat where the fare allows it, adds extras, and pays there.

So the extras are outside the conversation too. The plugin shops the ticket; seats, bags, and anything else beside it are handled on the airline’s own site.

Why builders should care

This is the same pattern we saw a week earlier when Manulife put travel insurance quotes in ChatGPT: the quote lives in the chat, the purchase on the brand’s website. For a single brand in a general assistant that is a reasonable first phase.

For an OTA or AI travel agent that already holds the itinerary, the gap is the part after the fare: the seat, the extra bag, cover for the trip, data on arrival, a lounge on the layover. If each of those jumps to a different website, the agent loses the session and the trip record loses the extras.

Keeping them in-session takes the rules from Build an AI travel agent that fulfills ancillaries:

  1. Quote before commit. Show the supplier’s price before anything is bought.
  2. Buy only on an explicit yes. A seat map or a quote is not consent.
  3. Idempotent paid calls. A retry must not buy twice.

On Ancilair those extras are tools: anc.seat.map then anc.seat.add and anc.extrabag.list then anc.extrabag.add on a ticket or a Duffel offer, plus insurance, eSIM, lounges, and fast track. Each is priced on the call at the supplier’s rate with 0% markup. See Beside the ticket or connect over MCP.

Questions

What did Southwest launch in ChatGPT?
On October 6, 2026, Southwest Airlines launched a plugin in ChatGPT that lets travellers plan trips, search Southwest flights, compare dates and fares, and see its fare products. Southwest calls it the first step in a phased AI-powered booking approach with OpenAI and AWS.
Can you book a Southwest flight inside ChatGPT?
No. Per Southwest's help center, booking, payment, Rapid Rewards account access, and reservations happen on Southwest.com or the Southwest app. Seats and extras are also chosen there.
What does this mean for AI travel agent builders?
Airline plugins in general assistants currently stop at shopping. Builders that run their own agent can keep the trip in one session by exposing extras such as seats, bags, insurance, eSIM, and lounges as tools with a quote step and a separate, explicitly approved purchase step.
